[Untitled]Jean Slick is an Associate Professor at Royal Roads University, and Program Head for the Master in Disaster and Emergency Management Program, the first graduate program in disaster management in Canada. Prior to joining Royal Roads on a full time basis, Jean was the Director of Disaster Management for the Canadian Red Cross, where she was employed for 28 years.

Jean began her involvement with disaster response 20 years ago with the Edmonton Tornado, and has since led Red Cross responses to a range of disaster types in both domestic and international contexts. She returned in the spring of 2007 from a two year posting in Indonesia, as the Country Representative for the Canadian Red Cross tsunami and earthquake response programs. Working is some of the worst tusnami affected areas, she led the organization’s disaster recovery operation, which included the rebuilding of over 5,500 homes, and water and sanitation, livelihood and disaster risk reduction programming.

Jean has a passion for teaching and facilitating; she has developed and delivered disaster management training programs across Canada, been a trainer with Reach Out (a refugee protection program), and developed and managed the Canadian Red Cross Immigration Detention Monitoring Program.

Jean holds a MEd from Dalhousie University, a BFA from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and has completed the course requirements for a Certificate in Negotiation and Mediation. As a lifelong learner, she recently decided to it was time to pursue doctoral studies, and she was accepted in the EdD on-line program at the University of Calgary, and is specializing in Educational Technology.

Jean loves the outdoors, and in her spare time can be found in her garden, or hiking or kayaking along the coast.
